2025-2026 MONTHLY MEETING  Highlights


SEPTEMBER 4 | ASIM PIRACHA, MD

The Society kicked off its 2025-2026 monthly meeting series on September 4, 2025, at the PNC Champions Club at Acrisure Stadium.

Members welcomed  Asim Piracha, MD, Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky Department of Ophthalmology and the University of Louisville Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and a board-certified ophthalmologist at Commonwealth Eye Surgery in Lexington, Kentucky. Special thanks to Joel Brown, MD, for extending the invitation to Dr. Piracha.

Dr. Piracha delivered two engaging lectures that were extremely well received, as reflected in the interesting Q&A discussions that followed. His lectures included:  When Standard IOLs Aren’t Enough: Specialty IOLs and Off-Label Solutions for Special Cases and Evolving Models for Surgical Delivery: Same-Day Surgery, Back-to-Back Cataract Surgery, and Bi-lateral Sequential Refractive Intra-Ocular Surgery.

Dr. Piracha was recently appointed by the Governor to the Kentucky Board of Licensure. Additionally, Eitan Shemuelian, MD, a second-year resident at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Ophthalmology, presented an interesting case, which was discussed in-depth by Dr. Piracha.The POS extends its gratitude to DompĂ©, Ocular Therapeutix, and Rayner  for their generous support of the September meeting. 

During the business portion of the meeting, Ryan Williamson, MD, Chief Resident, introduced the 2025–2026 Resident and Fellow Faculty. OCTOBER 9, 2025  | JORDAN DEANER, MD

The Pittsburgh Ophthalmology Society (POS) held its monthly meeting on October 9, welcoming guest speaker Jordan Deaner, MD (Uveitis and Vitreoretinal Surgery, Mid Atlantic Retina, Wills Eye Hospital; Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA).

Dr. Deaner, a widely published clinician-scientist, has authored numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed articles focused on vitreoretinal and ocular inflammatory diseases. An active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists, he has presented his research nationally and internationally, including at meetings of the American Uveitis Society, The Retina Society, and others.

Dr. Deaner delivered two engaging lectures (live streamed) — Post-Operative Macular Edema and The Case(s) for a Combined Uveitis-Vitreoretinal Surgeon followed by thoughtful dialogue during the question-and-answer discussion.

In addition, Haniah Zaheer, MD, a second-year ophthalmology resident at the University of Pittsburgh, presented a clinical case for review and commentary by Dr. Deaner. The Society extends special thanks to Avni Vyas, MD, for inviting Dr. Deaner and to our meeting sponsors — Apellis Pharmaceuticals, Genentech, and RxSight — for their generous support.

To act as the voice of ophthalmologic medicine in the Pittsburgh area, to serve as patient advocate in promoting preventive eye care, quality medical and surgical care and rehabilitative services for individuals with ophthalmologic diseases and to advance the knowledge, science and practice of ophthalmology, to assist in the improvement of the quality of ophthalmologic medicine and training therein, and to promote integrity in the practice of ophthalmic medicine.
